The 1910 Challenge

One hundred years ago the organisers of Le Tour de France decided that it wasn’t quite hard enough and added some stages in the Pyrenees. Enter the fearsome Col du Tourmalet. To commemorate 100 years of the Tourmalet being included in the tour, Rapha have honoured this with a tribute ride – The 1910 Challenge.

Halfords Tour Series – Chester

On Monday night I ventured out to Chester to watch Round 9 of the Halfords Tour Series. In the summer months of the last couple of years I have become slightly addicted to road racing and last years Tour Series proved good warm up viewing to the cyclefest that is the Tour de France. Read More »

The Impossible Dream

One of my favourite commercials on TV of all time. This is a new updated version to the one I helped supply some footage for a couple of years ago.

Delta Spirit – Strange Vine

I discovered this song on Last.fm about a week ago and I’ve not stopped listening to it since.  This video is from La Blogotheque’s Takeaway series, of which I’m a big fan.

Follow Me Trailer

I seem to while away more hours than I should watching biking videos on the web. They range from home edited, helmet cam efforts to slick, big(ish) budget productions. This one falls into the latter category and is pretty special. Definitely whetted my appetite for the full release.

Chris Akrigg XC Biking Vid

While aimlessly knocking about on the interweb, I found a new mtb video on the excellent SingleTrackWorld website.

The SingleTrack site says the vid will either make you want to go for a ride or, hide your bike in the shed. For me it sort of did both,. It doesn’t usually take much for me to want to go for a ride, and this guy is embarrassingly good. It’s definitely going to make me think about my trials skills. Or rather the lack of trials skills.

Red Bull Crashed Ice 2010

After watching the ski and snowboard cross in the Vancouver Olympics earlier in the year, I didn’t think there was a more exciting winter sport to watch. I may have been wrong. Read More »

WordPress Loop – Explained

At work yesterday, a colleague of mine asked me about modifying the post listing page of a WordPress site he’s building. I launched into a long, probably confusing, definitely dull description of ‘The Loop’ and it’s associated template tags.

After a while I noticed that said colleague had glazed over a bit and I remembered an article I’d seen a few weeks ago that explained the whole thing a lot more coherently than I could.

Dakar Rally 2010

I’ve followed the Dakar Rally since I was a kid. Watching ridiculous machines like Bowler Wildcats and the huge BMW GS and Yamaha Tenere bikes racing across the most inhospitable of terrain. With the shear physical effort required for racing across deep sand and huge sand dunes for up to 600km a day for two weeks, combined with the navigational challenge of finding your way around a largely featureless environment, this must truly be one of the most gruelling tests of endurance. It certainly puts my trips to North Wales into perspective.

In the deep mid-winter…

While snugly holed up indoors over the seasonal break, a couple of articles in the current version of the excellent Singletrack magazine really captured my imagination. Tales of Ultra mountain bike events like the the Iditarod Trail and the Great Divide Race reminded me of why I love mountain biking and they’re the sort of event I aspire to take part in.
